When William Barker died in an air crash in March 1930 his state funeral was the largest in the history of Toronto. He was a war hero and holder of the Victoria Cross, the DSO and Bar, the MC and two Bars, the Croix-de-Guerre, two Italian Silver Medals for Valour and three Mentions-in-Despatches. Moreover, he had 50 Great War victories to his credit. However, his life and achievements have, to all intents and purposes, been forgotten or overlooked when compared to that other great war hero, Billy Bishop. Wayne Ralph has made it his mission to discover why this is the case. In what was for him "a five-year emotional journey", Ralph has solved many mysteries and laid to rest many mistruths about the man. This is a detailed and well-researched biography of Lieutenant Colonel William Barker.

The proportions of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan were huge. At its peak, the plan was graduating over 3,000 aircrew a month from 107 training schools across Canada. In total, graduates numbered more than 130,000. This enormous war effort made Canada WWII’s “aerodrome of democracy.”

Full of personal anecdotes, Wings For Victory is the story of the BCATP and of the politicians who negotiated it into existence, of the officers and airmen of the RCAF and the RAF, and of the many civilians who made it work day by day. Above all, it is the story of the young men who entered the scheme as clerks and farmers, students and salesmen, and graduated as pilots, navigators, air gunners, air bombers, and flight engineers.

A True Canadian Hero! William Barker is Canada's most-decorated Great War hero. Born in Dauphin, Manitoba on Nov. 3, 1894, he wracked up a total of 50 victories on the Italian and Western fronts. He fought a spectacular dogfight, single-handedly, against 10-plus German fighters (Barker estimated to Captain Johnston in 1919 approximately 15) on October 27, 1918, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross (which is traditionally awarded posthumously). His life was tragically cut short in a flying accident in Ottawa in 1930. Despite his decorations for bravery, his remains were buried in a crypt marked Smith (his wife's family) in Toronto. The author felt the need to address Barker's obscurity. In true Wayne Ralph style, he brings to life the country that was Canada in the early 20th century through this compelling story. This new illustrated edition celebrates Canada's mostdecorated WWI combatant. The exploits of William Barker, VC, DSO, MC merit lasting publication.
